ORDINATION OF DEACONS

The Archdiocese of Gulu has been blessed with the ordination of three young men to the diaconate on Sunday June 22, 2008. The Eucharistic celebration that brought together hundreds of Christians from all parishes of Gulu Archdiocese,  Lira Diocese, Nebbi Diocese and other places as far as United States of America, was presided over by Archbishop, Most Rev. John Baptist Odama, co-celebrant Auxiliary Bishop Sabino Odoki Ocan, over 25 priests and 2 deacons.

The newly ordained deacons are William Obina Felicity of St. Joseph’s Cathedral Parish, John Mark Oryem of Namukora Parish and Joseph Jong Opoka of Omiya-anyima Parish

The ordained deacons were called upon to continuously pray so that they practise their call to serve and lead God’s people. Hierarchically, the deacons’ help in the service at the altar, baptising people, visiting the sick and officiating at Christian at funerals.

“As ministers of Christ, you are to serve people in love with Christ, be men of good reputation full of good will and charity, commit to celibacy: a challenge but source of spiritual fruitfulness and wealth, cling to Christ more easily, free yourself for the service of God and man...........resolve celibacy as a sign of commitment to Christ....” Archbishop’s Sermon.

The newly ordained deacons were given tools for pastoral work: the Book of the Gospels for they will proclaim the Word of God in Eucharistic celebrations, and the Breviary, the book of prayers by which they will pray with and for the church during the different hours of the day and the different liturgical seasons of the year. While handing over these tools Archbishop reminded the deacons to believe what they read, teach what they believe and practise what they teach as ministers of Christ.

During the mass, His Grace called upon parents to give the Church more children to help in fulfilling Christ’s call; go to the whole world and proclaim the Good news...

During the celebration, the Archbishop acknowledged with gratitude the dedication of the Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph from the Central East of United States who have come to evangelise in the Archdiocese of Gulu. He said the team of five will work in Amuru Parish. Another team of nine from Pittsburg-US were also present in the Mass and he informed the congregation that the above are on a visit with the plan to cooperate and work with the people of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish.
